How to Protect Your People and Places From Germs and Viruses

September 01, 2020

Keeping objects, surfaces and spaces clean is an important step to staying safe and healthy. However, cleaning involves more than just soap, water and a little bit of scrubbing. For instance, did you know that germs are removed with soap and water but not killed? It’s true! In order to kill germs a disinfectant must be used.

But when to use water with soap and when to use disinfectant? Thankfully, this is an art form that we’ve perfected. Discover the ins and outs of cleaning below:

Cleaning: removes visible dirt, organic matter, viruses, fungi and bacteria. This is accomplished with water, detergent and by physically scrubbing an object or surface. We aim to remove as many microbes (germs) as possible. Microbes will not be able to live on a clean, dry surface without nutrients and moisture. By thoroughly cleaning a surface, the need for sanitizers, disinfectants and other chemicals reduces as well as the risk of spreading illness.

Sanitizing: reduces but does not necessarily eliminate all bacteria on a treated surface. It’s important to note that sanitizers do not have claims for viruses or fungi. A product must show a reduction of at least 99.9% of each type of bacteria on non-food contact surfaces (carpet sanitizers, air sanitizers, laundry additives and in-tank toilet bowl sanitizers) in order to be used as a sanitizer. Sanitizing is meant to further lower the number of microbes on a surface after properly cleaning.

Disinfecting: kills germs on surfaces by using chemicals. As cleaning doesn’t necessarily kill microbes, disinfecting doesn’t necessarily clean surfaces. Disinfecting destroys infectious and undesirable microbes. The number eliminated will depend on the specific chemical and its treatment application. Our primary means of disinfecting spaces is with ULV (Ultra Low Volume) fogging. These handheld foggers distribute an EPA approved virucide disinfectant diluted with water to uniformly coat all targeted surfaces. At home, use an EPA-registered household disinfectant and be sure to read instructions carefully.
