What Pests To Expect This Spring & Summer In Maine

April 03, 2023

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has released its Spring and Summer 2023 Bug Barometer prediction for New England, and it's not great news. It’s also not at all surprising. Let’s take a look.

What the NPMA is predicting for Maine & New England

In the coming months, the NPMA forecasts there will be an increase in pest activity across the Northeast due to the region's warmer-than-average temperatures and increased humidity. This forecast means that Mainers should be prepared for an influx of pests including ants, mosquitoes, and ticks.

Ants

Every spring, ants across Maine emerge from their winter retreats in order to find food and water. As this year is no exception, property owners should be on the lookout for both nuisance ants and wood-destroying carpenter ants. They may be content foraging on outside but it’s more than likely they’ll slip inside if there’s easy access in order to find food and water sources.

Mosquitoes

Doesn’t it seem like mosquitoes live to annoy New Englanders? Perhaps it’s because they only have a limited time to do so but regardless of the why, the reality is mosquito activity will start picking up sooner than later and before you know it they will be trying their hardest to make a meal out of your blood.

Since infected mosquitoes are capable carrying and transmitting West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis, residents of Maine should dress to repel mosquito bites if they plan on spending time outside and make sure all window screens are in good working order.

Ticks

Most of us are already aware of the threat ticks in Maine pose to our health and wellbeing but just in case, it’s best to avoid any contact with ticks. Since they’re likely already active thanks to a milder winter, the problem is only going to grow worse as we transition from spring to summer.

To protect yourself from ticks and the diseases they spread (i.e., Lyme disease), be sure to wear clothing that covers your arms and legs when spending time outdoors, apply insect repellent, and check for ticks after each foray outdoors (even if it’s only for a couple of minutes). Don’t forget to check your pets too!
